Sermon – Holy Trinity Sunday
John 16:12-15
May 30, 2010
“1+1+1=1”
I have a math equation for you, what is 1+1+1? 1+1+1=1
The Trinity is a doctrine, it is how the Church explained that even though we believe in one God, we know God as three “persons” Father, Son and Holy Spirit, so 1+1+1 = 1.
As Father/Mother/Parent; the Creator God. As Son/Jesus Christ; the Redeemer God. As Holy Spirit, God with us; the Sustainer God.
The three “persons” of the Trinity are of one substance.
God is in relationship or in harmony with God’s self, or as it’s been said, the Trinity is God’s dance with God’s self.
That means that the God who created the entire universe is intimately involved in relating with us today. The same God that created the cosmos is the God that walked the earth, that ministered to the sick and broken, that redeemed the world, and is the same God that is with us today.
The Psalmist (Psalm 8) wonders: “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?”
Have you ever wondered this? When we consider that this galaxy is 100,000 light years across, or that there are billions of galaxies… and then to consider that the very God who created the universe is alive today and cares for us deeply. It is amazing. This is the God of the Trinity.
The God Father Son Holy Spirit, was in relationship from the very beginning, and longs to be in relationship, with us and all creation.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus before his death assures the disciples that the God revealed in him is at work today.
So in the midst of our broken relationships with each other and with creation, God longs to be in relationship with us, and for us to be in relationship and in harmony with all of creation
We think about broken relationships between friends and family; of division, hatred, violence, war. Or broken relationship we have with the environment, especially as oil continues to pour out into Gulf, devastating the marine life and the livelihood of so many on the coast.
As the Psalm says “you have given human beings dominion … over the works of your hands the fish of the sea, all that passes through the sea.”
The God of the Trinity, the God that is 1+1+1=1; is the God that seeks the same oneness, the same harmony, the same relationship and the same bond with all of creation. In so doing, we remember that we are in harmony with one another and all of creation. So may we live into the fullness of our relationship with the Triune God and with one another, Amen.
