“you are an eagle”

“There is a tale told about a certain man went through the forest seeking any bird of interest he might find. He caught a young eagle, brought it home and put it among the chickens, and gave it chicken food to eat even though it was an eagle, the king of birds.
Five years later, a park ranger came to see him and, after passing through the garden, said 'That bird is an Eagle, not a chicken.'

“I’ve had it!”

These were the words from Steven Slater, the JetBlue flight attendant who reportedly had an altercation with a passenger as the plane was landing. The plane arrived to the gate, he cursed over the loud speaker, quit, took a beer then deployed the emergency slide and then used it to exit the plane.

What does Snooki value?
I was watching MTV and other programs asking the question: What values are coming through here?
I did find a show with positive values on MTV called “If you really knew me” where teens share their problems openly and build a supportive community.

But let’s ask this question. I want to go on a bus and start asking people: What do you value? What would be the answer?

Can money buy you happiness? Can money promise you security?
We read in the news a lot about greed being at the root of the financial crisis and the food crisis.
We hear about credit default swaps and questionable investing practices. We hear about big bonuses and golden parachutes.
Why do they do it? Because the most important thing is the bottom line or profit.

“a living prayer for the journey”

It is clear (especially in Luke’s gospel) that Jesus was rooted in prayer, and he often retreated to pray (3:21-22; 4:42; 5:16; 6:12; 9:18; 10:21-22; 22:39-46).
The disciples noticed this, and asked, “Lord, teach us to pray…”
On our journey with Jesus (sermon series), prayer is a key part of discipleship

Worry. What do you worry about? There is a lot to be worried about, especially these days.
I’ve been thinking about worry, and the various things I worry about, trying to answer the question: Why do we worry?
The things we worry about are finite things we can’t control, but we sure try to.

In today’s gospel it appears Martha is doing the right thing, and her sister Mary won’t help her, she is at the feet of Jesus, listening to him.

We continue on our sermon series, Journey with Jesus. As Jesus continues on his way to Jerusalem, he is stopped by a lawyer. The lawyer is quizzing Jesus about how to inherit eternal life.
Since lawyers are experts in the law, Jesus gets him to answer his own question according to the law. Love God & love your neighbor.
As lawyers do, the lawyer parses the question: Who is my neighbor?

The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and his compassion is over all that he has made.
